For our class project each group had to study changemakers who made a big difference in American democracy. We wanted to see how people from times helped shape the government and the rights that people have today in the United States. Our class split the topics into four main time periods: the people who wrote the Constitution in the 1700s people from the 1800s leaders from the 1900s and changemakers from 2000 to now. My group was in charge of the time period, which was about the people who helped create the United States government back in the 1700s. I had to research James Madison and his part in shaping the government and the Constitution. Before I started this project I had heard of James Madison in history class. I did not really understand how important James Madison was in creating the government system that we still have today. Working on this project helped me see that James Madison played an important role when the United States was founded. James Madison was very involved in the talks and planning that led to the creation of the United States Constitution. James Madison spent a lot of time studying kinds of governments throughout history before the convention even started. He wanted to know what kinds of governments worked well and which ones did not so the United States could build a system.Because James Madison did all that research and preparation he had ideas about how the government should be set up when he went to the Constitutional Convention. Learning about this made me realize that the leaders who created the government did not just make decisions. They thought carefully about how power should be divided and how the government could protect the rights of citizens while keeping the country stable. This project really made me understand the importance of changemakers like James Madison in shaping democracy. Changemakers, like James Madison are still important today. We can learn a lot from them about how to make our government better.
Madison made a big contribution when he played a major role in the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The Constitutional Convention was a meeting where delegates from states got together to figure out how the new nation should be run. At that time the United States was still using the Articles of Confederation which was not working well because it created a national government that was very weak. A lot of leaders thought the country needed an more organized system of government.Madison helped come up with the Virginia Plan, which was a proposal for creating a structure for the government. The Virginia Plan suggested that the government should be divided into three branches: the legislative branch, which makes laws the executive branch, which enforces laws and the judicial branch, which interprets laws. This idea eventually became the basis of the government and created the system of checks and balances that stops any one branch from becoming too powerful.Madison also helped defend the Constitution after it was written. Some people were not sure about giving the government more power so Madison worked with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay to write the Federalist Papers. The Federalist Papers were essays that explained how the new government would work and why the Constitution would help protect the country and its people. One of Madisons famous essays was Federalist No. 10 Where he talked about the problem of political factions, which are groups of people with strong interests or opinions that could hurt the rights of others. Madison said that a large republic with different groups would make it harder for any single faction to gain too much control. Learning about Madison and the Constitutional Convention and the Federalist Papers showed me that Madison was not involved in writing the Constitution but also helped explain and defend the Constitution so that people all over the country would support the Constitution and the new government. Madison and the Constitution are still important today because the Constitution is the foundation of the government and the system of government that Madison helped create is still, in use today.Madison made a difference by helping to create the Bill of Rights.
When the Constitution was finished a lot of Americans were worried that it did not say clearly that people have rights. Some people thought the new government might get too powerful and take away the rights of citizens. So Madison worked on adding the Bill of Rights to the Constitution. The Bill of Rights is a list of rights that people have like the right to say what they think the right to believe what they want the right to write what they think and the right to a fair trial. These rights are still very important in the United States today.Madison also kept working for the country. Eventually became the fourth president of the United States. What he is most famous for is helping to create the Constitution and making sure people have rights.I learned a lot about James Madison. It made me appreciate the work that went into creating the American government. It showed me that the United States did not just become a democracy overnight it was created by leaders who wanted a government. This project helped me understand why Madison is remembered as one of the important founding fathers.I also learned why his work is still important in the United States today.By learning about what Madison did I was able to understand how the government works and why the Constitution is such a part of American history. The Bill of Rights and the Constitution are still very important to the United States today because of Madison and other founding fathers.Madison is a part of American history and his work, on the Bill of Rights and the Constitution will always be remembered.
