For our class project, each group had to research a group of changemakers that had significantly impacted American democracy. The purpose of this assignment was to learn how various people throughout history have influenced the government of the United States and the freedoms that all American citizens enjoy today. By studying these historical figures, we were able to better understand how the actions and ideas of certain leaders helped shape the democratic system that still exists in the United States today. Our class divided the research into four different historical periods: the 1700s when the Constitution was written, the 1800s, the 1900s, and the time period from 2000 to the present. Each student was responsible for focusing on one of these time periods and learning about the important individuals who made a difference during that era.I chose to research the 1700s, which involved many of the leaders that helped shape the government of the United States during its earliest years. This time period was extremely important because it included the American Revolution and the creation of the Constitution, which became the foundation of the country’s government. During this time, many leaders worked together to establish a new system that would guide the nation and protect the rights of its citizens. I specifically chose to research Alexander Hamilton and his contributions to our government as well as his support for the Constitution. Hamilton is often considered one of the most influential Founding Fathers because of the important role he played in helping to build the structure of the American government.Prior to working on this project, I had only heard the name Hamilton in my history class and did not fully understand how important he was in the early stages of the United States government. I knew that he was connected to the founding of the country, but I had not learned many details about his contributions. By reading and learning more about him during this project, I came to the realization that he played a very important role in the beginning of the United States. Hamilton believed strongly that the country needed a strong central government in order to survive and remain united. After gaining independence from Great Britain, the new nation faced many challenges, including disagreements between states and uncertainty about how the government should operate. Hamilton understood that without a strong and organized system, the country might struggle to stay together.

As I continued learning about his ideas, I realized that the Founding Fathers put a great deal of thought into how the country would be governed. They debated many different ideas and tried to find the best way to balance power while still protecting the rights of the people. Hamilton was one of the leaders who believed that a well-structured government would help the nation remain stable and successful. His ideas about government, leadership, and national unity helped influence the direction of the United States during its early years. One of the most important contributions that Hamilton made to the United States was his help in promoting and defending the Constitution after it had been written. After the Constitutional Convention in 1787, the Constitution needed to be approved by the states before it could officially become the law of the land. At this point in American history, many people were unsure about accepting the Constitution and were worried that the new government might become too powerful. Some Americans feared that the country could end up with a government that had too much control over the people, similar to the British rule they had just fought against during the American Revolution.Because of these concerns, Hamilton worked together with James Madison and John Jay to write a series of essays known as The Federalist Papers. These essays were published in newspapers and were meant to explain to the public why the Constitution had been written and how it would help create a stable government in the United States. The essays addressed many of the fears that people had about the new government and explained how the Constitution included systems that would prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful. Hamilton wrote the majority of these papers and used strong arguments to convince people that the Constitution would actually help the United States become stronger and more united.

Through these writings, Hamilton also helped educate the public about the new government that had been created. At that time, many citizens did not fully understand how the government would function or how the Constitution would protect their rights. The Federalist Papers helped explain these ideas and encouraged people to support the ratification of the Constitution. Because of Hamilton’s efforts, many Americans began to feel more confident about accepting the new system of government. Today, the Federalist Papers are still studied because they provide important insight into the thinking of the Founding Fathers and the principles behind the Constitution.Hamilton also made many important contributions to the United States after the government had officially been created. He became the first United States Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington. This was a very important position because the country was still young and struggling to build a stable economy after the Revolutionary War. At that time, the United States had a large amount of debt and needed a strong financial plan in order to recover and grow. With this position, Hamilton was able to create a financial plan that would help the young country manage its debt and build a stronger economy. One of his main ideas was that the federal government should take responsibility for the debts that the states had accumulated during the war. By combining these debts, Hamilton believed that the country would appear more reliable and trustworthy to other nations. This plan also helped create a stronger relationship between the states and the national government. In addition to this, Hamilton supported the creation of a national bank that would help manage the country’s money and support economic growth. Although not everyone agreed with his ideas, Hamilton believed that a strong financial system was necessary for the nation’s long-term success. His economic policies helped lay the foundation for the country’s financial system and allowed the United States to develop a more stable economy. These contributions showed how committed Hamilton was to strengthening the nation and ensuring that it could continue to grow.

This project taught me that changemakers like Alexander Hamilton were extremely important in creating a democracy in America. The government that exists today did not appear overnight. Instead, it took many ideas, debates, and years of hard work from people who were dedicated to building a successful and stable country. Leaders like Hamilton believed in the future of the nation and worked hard to develop systems that would help the country survive and grow. Alexander Hamilton’s contributions to defending the Constitution and creating a financial system in America are clear examples of how one person’s ideas can influence the course of a nation’s history.Overall, this project helped me understand that a great deal of effort and planning went into creating the American government. Before researching Hamilton, I had not realized how complex the process was or how many challenges the Founding Fathers faced while building a new nation. Learning about Alexander Hamilton also helped me understand why he is considered one of the most important Founding Fathers in American history. His dedication to supporting the Constitution and strengthening the country’s economy played a major role in shaping the early United States.Learning about Alexander Hamilton’s contributions to American history provided me with a greater understanding of how the government works in America today and why the Constitution remains such an important part of the nation’s history. His ideas and actions helped establish systems that are still used in the country today. Hamilton’s contributions to defending the Constitution and creating a financial system in America continue to influence the United States, showing that the work of historical changemakers can have a lasting impact for generations.
