Presentation Reflection Blog by Sebastian Viter
Reflection of my group and other groups presentations
The class presentations were divided into four groups, with each group responsible for presenting one major part of the textbook. This structure helped organize the presentations and made it easier to understand how public speaking skills develop step by step. Each group focused on a different stage of the public speaking process, from getting started, to developing and researching a speech, to delivering it effectively, and finally to special occasion and group presentations. Overall, the presentations helped connect the course topic and showed how all the concepts build on one another.
My groups presentation covered Chapters 13-17, with each group member responsible for presenting a different chapter. This approach helped keep the presentation organized and prevented information overload. It also showed how the different types of speeches discussed in the course connect to one another. Working with my group was honestly a blessing and they all did they part and communicated everything.
The chapters my group covered included informative speaking, persuasive speaking, understanding argument, distance speaking and media appearances, and special occasion and group presentations. Each chapter focused on a different speaking purpose, but together they showed how public speaking skills are applied in our everyday life situations. Seeing all of these chapters presented together helped connect ideas across the course instead of viewing each chapter separately.
My specific part of the presentation focused on Chapter 17: Special Occasion and Group Presentations. Preparing this section helped me understand how special occasion speeches differ from informative and persuasive speeches. Instead of focusing on teaching information or changing opinions, special occasion speeches are meant to recognize meaningful events and connect emotionally with the audience. Examples include speeches of introduction, toasts, tributes, acceptance speeches, and elevator speeches. Presenting this chapter helped me realize how important tone, audience awareness, and purpose are when giving a speech meant to mark an important moment.
While working on Chapter 17, I learned that special occasion speeches do not need to be long to be effective, they are often short, simple, and meaningful. What makes them effective is how well they match the occasion and how genuine the speaker sounds. This section also shows the importance of preparation, even for brief speeches, and showed that having a more short speech can actually make a message more memorable.
Other groups
The first group presented on Part I: Getting Started, which focused on the foundations of public speaking. Their presentation covered topics such as the evolving art of public speaking, building confidence, and listening. This group did a good job explaining how public speaking is a skill that develops over time rather than something people are naturally good at. Their discussion on confidence was especially relatable, since many students experience nervousness when speaking in front of others. Hearing strategies for managing anxiety and improving confidence helped reinforce the idea that practice and preparation are key to becoming a better speaker.
The presentation on listening also stood out because it emphasized that communication is not just about speaking, but also about understanding others. This group explained how effective listening improves communication and helps speakers connect better with their audience. This presentation helped highlight the importance of being engaged and attentive, which is a skill that applies both in public speaking and everyday conversations.
The second group presented on Part II: Developing and Researching Your Speech, which focused on planning and preparation. Their presentation explained how choosing a clear purpose and topic is the first step in creating an effective speech. This group emphasized how understanding the goal of a speech helps guide the content, organization, and tone. This helped reinforce the idea that strong speeches begin with a clear plan rather than jumping straight into writing.
This group also discussed adapting to the audience, researching topics, supporting ideas, and organizing a speech. Their presentation showed how audience awareness affects every stage of speech preparation. They also explained how using credible sources and strong evidence helps build credibility and make arguments more convincing. The section on organizing and outlining a speech was especially helpful because it showed how structure helps the audience follow along and understand the message more clearly.
The third group focused on Part III: Presenting Yourself and Your Ideas, which covered delivery and presentation techniques. Their presentation discussed using language effectively, integrating presentation media, and delivering a speech with confidence. This group did a good job explaining how word choice and clarity affect how a message is received. They also discussed how visuals, such as slides, should support the speaker rather than distract from the message.
The discussion on delivery was especially impactful because it focused on vocal tone, body language, and eye contact. Watching this group present helped reinforce these ideas, since it was clear that confident delivery made the presentation more engaging. This group’s presentation showed how preparation and practice directly influence how comfortable and confident a speaker appears.
Overall
Overall, the class presentations were helpful because they showed how public speaking skills work in real situations. Having one group present each part of the textbook made it easier to see how the topics connect to each other. Watching other groups present helped me understand the material better and gave me examples of good presentation skills that I can use in the future.
In conclusion, the presentations helped connect the textbook material to real-life communication situations. Each group contributed to a better understanding of the public speaking process, from building confidence to delivering meaningful speeches. My individual focus on Chapter 17 helped reinforce how public speaking skills apply to special occasions and group communication. Overall, the presentations strengthened my understanding of public speaking and highlighted the importance of preparation, audience awareness, and effective delivery.

If I had to choose a favorite presentation other than my own group’s I would say either Group 2 or Group 3. Both groups stood out because of their confidence and how comfortable they seemed while presenting. They spoke clearly and transitioned smoothly between speakers, which made their presentations easy to follow. Their confidence made the information more engaging and helped keep the class interested throughout their presentations. I also want to thank the project managers for also doing such a great job on their parts.
